             abstract = "This work evaluates digital classification algorithms over 
                         TM/Landsat5 imagery to identify land coverage and vegetation 
                         types. Bands TM3, TM4 and TM5 from Landsat5 were used to classify 
                         a region between the Madeira and Purus River in the state of 
                         Amazon, Brazil. Airborne videography images were used as ground 
                         truth for validation and statistical analysis of the 
                         classification. Four algorithms were tested, two of then based on 
                         classification by pixel, Maximum Likelihood Maxver and Kmedia, 
                         respectively, and two of them based on regions, Bhattacharya and 
                         Isoseg, respectively. The classification algorithms based on 
                         regions, Bhattacharya and Isoseg, presented the best results with 
                         Kappa coefficient values of 0,75 and 0,67, respectively. The 
                         classification algorithms based on pixel (Maxver and Kmedia) 
                         presented low classification performance.",
